No parent ever expects their child to suffer humiliating or deadly attacks by their fraternity brothers or sisters, team members, or members of groups their child wishes to be a part of. Yet, the incidents of hazing continue to rise. More than 250,000 students in the United States are victims of hazing each year. If you or someone you love has suffered injuries from hazing, our Denver personal injury attorneys want to help.
The Hazing Prevention Network states that 74 percent of student-athletes experience at least one form of hazing while in college with the most frequently reported hazing being participating in drinking games. Additionally, 55 percent of college students in fraternities, sororities, and other student organizations experienced hazing.
We believe that colleges and universities are places where students should be safe to grow and learn in a positive environment.

What is Hazing?
You may be unsure whether hazing has occurred. Some anti-hazing groups have defined hazing as any action taken to cause embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule and risks the emotional and/or physical harm of a member of a group.
The Colorado state legislature states that any activity by which a person recklessly endangers the health or safety of or causes a risk of bodily injury to an individual for purposes of initiation or admission into or affiliation with any student organization” is hazing.
The National Library of Medicine defines hazing as committing acts against an individual or forcing an individual into committing an act that creates a risk for harm for the individual to be initiated into or affiliated with an organization.
Some examples of hazing may include:
- Forced consumption of any food, beverage, or substance not intended for human consumption
- Prolonged forced physical activity
- Prolonged sleep deprivation
- Prolonged deprivation of food or water
- Sexual assault
- Paddling or other physical assaults
Colleges and universities are free to define what constitutes hazing on their campuses and the consequences of such behavior.
If you think you may have been injured by acts of hazing, you need to speak with a Denver hazing injury lawyer as soon as possible. There are deadlines for filing a claim and you want to preserve your right to pursue compensation for your catastrophic injuries.
